Alzheimer's Disease

INVESTIGATING A NOVEL TREATMENT FOR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Purpose of this research

The Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre (MAPrc) is investigating a new treatment for people with Alzheimer's disease.

Our research is examining whether transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can improve the cognitive symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease such as memory and thinking difficulties.

What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?

TMS is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation which uses a magnetic pulse to stimulate brain cells. A coil is placed on the participant’s head whilst they are seated comfortably in a chair, with the magnetic field increasing activity in the cells underneath the coil.

TMS has been used for over 20 years in the treatment of depression. It has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for that condition. MAPrc are now testing its use in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

You will be randomly selected to receive either active or placebo (inactive) TMS. If you were randomised to the placebo group you will be offered active stimulation at the end of the follow-up period.

Who is eligible to participate?

  • Men and women, aged 50 – 95 years
  • With a diagnosis of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease
  • Interested in participating

About the Principal Investigators

The research project is being led by Associate Professor Kate Hoy, a Clinical Neuropsychologist and Professor Paul Fitzgerald, a Psychiatrist and Director of the Therapeutic Brain Stimulation division.

The Therapeutic Brain Stimulation division at MAPrc use advanced neuroscience technology to investigate brain function and develop innovative treatments across a range of psychiatric, neurological and neurodegenerative disorders.
