Dr Neil Thomas BSc (Hons), DClinPsych, CPsychol, MAPS, AFBPsS
Neil Thomas is a clinical psychologist with expertise in psychological interventions for severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. He runs the MAPrc Voices Clinic, which provides psychological therapy for people with experiences such as hearing voices and other problems associated with psychosis. He is also a Senior Clinical Psychologist with Alfred Health, where he co-ordinates the psychological interventions for psychosis program. Neil is involved in a number of research projects aiming to developing advances in the psychological treatment of mental illness. These include a current NHMRC-funded randomised controlled trial of a new psychological approach called acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for medication-resistant symptoms, which is being run in conjunction with La Trobe University.
Neil completed a doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of London in 2001 and went on to work at the UK’s Maudsley Hospital before his move to Melbourne, where he has combined therapeutic work within mental health services with clinical research. He has worked for Monash University since 2005, and regularly lectures on the Doctorate in Psychology program.
