The cost of mental illness

Mental illness has a huge impact on the lives of many people in Australia -- on those afflicted, their carers, families, friends and the community at large.  It is impossible to quantify this human toll, but it is possible to get some measure of the huge economic cost of mental illness.

In Australia it has been estimated that mental health symptoms result in a loss of $ AU2.7 billion in employee productivity. Mental illness is the third largest contributor to the total health burden (13.2%) and the largest overall cause of disability (27%). Despite this, only 6% of the national recurrent health expenditure is spent on mental illness.
