MENDING MINDS: A community presentation

An interesting and informative presentation from five different mental health leaders was held on Thursday 17 May 2012  to a packed out audience.

Mental health professionals alongside consumers and students joined together for a community presentation on Thursday 17 May at the Alfred Hospital.

Coinciding with Schizophrenia Awareness Week, the presentation was focused around this illness and informed the audience about innovative new treatments being developed at MAPrc.  Professor Jayashri Kulkarni gave a background of the illness and explored the psychopharmacology aspects of schizophrenia.  Ms Sacha Filia was the next speaker to inform about the healthy lifestyles program which looks at the physical health of people with schizophrenia.  Dr Neil Thomas presented on the advances in psychological interventions for schizophrenia including CBT, cognitive remediation and peer delivered interventions.  Dr Stuart Lee Research spoke about research that helps services better care for people with schizophrenia.  Professor Paul Fitzgerald wrapped up the event with his presentation on new treatments for schizophrenia, specifically looking at brain stimulation techniques.

This is a series of educational community presentations that MAPrc will be hosting.  The next Mending Minds presentation will be held in August and more details will be available shortly.  If you wish to become a friend of MAPrc and be notified of these presentations, please email d.riach@alfred.org.au
